Calvisson
Archaeological excavations revealed shards of Etruscan amphorae from the 7th century B.C, which certifies that since the Antiquity, wine is produced at Calvisson.
27 centuries of wine History
Since the Prehistoric times, men are settling down on the Vaunage lands, between Nîmes and Sommières, and living in many farms. The town started to develop in the Middle Ages, its history is marked by tracks of Religious Wars. It is marked by the History of local Protestant Resistance. The town took off in the 18th and 19th century thanks to vintners. A new way of life settles in and results in the construction of nice mansions.
To be seen : Along the Voie verte (bicycle path), a “time wall”: 27 centuries of History in 9 frames evoking civilizations from the first wine drinker to the modern times.
The windmills of Roc Gachone, peak of the Vaunage
In the hill above Calvisson, at the top of Roc Gachone, peak of the Vaunage, four windmills were erected in the 17th and 18th centuries of which one was destroyed in 1838. The sharp windmill is called “signal de Cassini” it served as a landmark during the making of the map of France, ordered by Louis the 14th in 1747.
This place delivers a view on typical and unique landscapes grouped under the name of “Vaunage.”
