Vidourle, a place of life
Vidourle is a river of about 100 km which comes from the south of the Cévennes and flows in the Meditteranean. Populated by cyprinids and carnivorous (perches, pikes, eels, pikeperches, carps, and black basses). It is also the home of a great diversity of bird species such as the grey heron and the kingfisher. It is a Natura 2000 site, with an outstanding biodiversity.
Vidourle offers a wild and relaxing nature for many species, living there. It is a well appreciated river by walkers and fishermen. In Sommières, the banks are managed with a carpist course. Take time to take a break at the edge of water, under the shade of plan tree and keep your eyes open !
Vidourle, between history and traditions
Each year, during the local festivities of Sommières, the Manadiers and Gardians lead to their herds of bulls ands horses in the Vidourle. This traditional unique spectacle is called the “Gase” or “Gaze” and allows you to admire the know-how of those enthusiast professional.
It is the swimming crossing of a stream by bulls in company of Gardians on horseback. This custom comes from the travel that the Manadiers used to do. The Gardians had to cross many streams to lead their herd between their meadow and their new pastures.
