Pondres Castle

The origins...
The first stones of Pondres Castle seem to whisper centuries of history among ancient Roman and Celtic ruins and mysterious artefacts found near the river. The majesty and tranquillity of the place hint at a very ancient human presence.

In the Middle Ages, the château became a stronghold. The first known written record, dating from 1195, attests to its strategic importance and its role for the lords of Anduze, then those of Ganges. Despite the ravages of the Revolution, the estate retains traces of the families who shaped it.

From the 17th to the 18th century, the Crouzet and then the Villardi Quinson families transformed Pondres: elevations, keep, wings and park became an elegant and refined place, combining prestige and comfort. In the 19th century, new developments and reconstructions completed the estate, before maintenance declined in the 20th century. Many of the park's remarkable features disappeared under the luxuriant vegetation. The collapse of roofs and floors marked the beginning of the castle's ruin, with the north-west tower threatening to collapse.

The acquisition of the Pondres Historic Estate by the Gard General Council in 2003, after pre-emption by SAFER to safeguard agricultural interests and regional heritage,
was carried out with the aim of creating a ‘remarkable land development project’. In addition, the President of the Department, accompanied by the Mayor of Villevieille, wanted to see the Château revived from its.
